The 5 Top Essential Oils to Manage Discomfort and Inflammation

Research on essential oils has steadily grown, revealing their strong anti-inflammatory effects and potential to ease discomfort. While a wide range of essential oils have been studied for their benefits, I’m highlighting my top five favorites that can help ease discomfort and help you feel better—fast.
Remember, it’s best to dilute essential oils with a carrier oil before use. There are three reasons for this:
1. A carrier oil helps spread the essential oil over the desired area.
2. Essential oils are volatile compounds that evaporate quickly (also known as “flashing off”).
3. Carrier oils help prevent intense sensations from “hot” oils like ginger or cinnamon.
The internal use of essential oils is controversial, so I will not be addressing it here.
Frankincense
The first oil I turn to for any type of inflammation is Frankincense. Known as the “king of oils,” Frankincense is derived from the resin of the Boswellia tree and has been cherished for its health benefits for centuries. One of its most notable applications is easing various types of discomfort.
I was recently reading a book titled The Lost Apothecary, set in the late 1800s. One of the characters had severe arthritis—her remedy was Boswellia, a derivative of Frankincense.
Topically, it reduces inflammation, relaxes muscles, and improves blood flow. I like to rub it into areas of discomfort mixed with a carrier oil. It’s also excellent as a base for layering with other oils to enhance their effects, and when mixed with Epsom salts, it makes for a soothing, relaxing bath.
Turmeric
Turmeric’s anti-inflammatory properties extend to its essential oil. Used for centuries in Ayurvedic health practices, turmeric essential oil contains two powerful compounds—turmerone and ar-turmerone—that set it apart from the root itself. This oil can have a soothing effect and promotes healthy circulation.
Ginger
This is my go-to oil for the deep, aching discomfort that often comes with cold weather. Ginger is a warming oil that encourages circulation and provides a comforting heat to joints and muscles that are irritated and inflamed.
Peppermint
Peppermint was one of the first essential oils I was introduced to. It’s considered a “hot oil” but also has powerful cooling properties thanks to its menthol content. It provides a cooling, tingling sensation that can “numb” areas of discomfort—perfect for neck and head tension!
Copaiba
I remember being introduced to Copaiba and using it on a sore knee. The relief was so immediate that I knew this would be a must-have in my anti-inflammatory toolkit. Like Frankincense, Copaiba is derived from tree resin and is excellent for calming inflammation. When massaged into muscles and joints, it feels soothing and deeply relaxing.
The list of essential oils that can help with discomfort is long. I love combining or layering oils to create a more intense and long-lasting effect.
Of course, there are ready-to-go formulas—like doTERRA®’s Deep Blue oil and lotion—but sometimes you don’t want a warming or cooling effect. In those cases, oils like Frankincense or Copaiba can be the answer.
