How to Enjoy the Holidays Without Wreaking Havoc on Your Health

The holiday season is a beautiful paradox: equal parts joy, magic, connection—and temptation. Rich meals, disrupted routines, late nights, travel, and stress can leave even the healthiest among us feeling drained by the time the new year arrives.

But here’s the good news: enjoying the season does not require sacrificing your well-being. With a few mindful strategies, you can celebrate wholeheartedly and stay balanced.

Over years of coaching individuals, I’ve learned that most people struggle with the all-or-nothing mentality. What works far better is embracing an 80/20 approach—making nourishing choices 80% of the time, while intentionally enjoying life’s indulgences the other 20%. This allows for pleasure, connection, and flexibility without the guilt spiral.

Here’s how to savor the festivities without starting January in recovery mode.

Set Clear Intentions for the Month

Before the season sweeps you up, pause and reflect:

Creating a mental roadmap helps you protect your energy, avoid overcommitting, and stay aligned with what genuinely nourishes you.

Enjoy Holiday Foods—Mindfully, Not Restrictively

Deprivation always backfires.

I know for myself that a small piece of homemade dessert is pure joy. I skip store-bought sweets because the ingredients often aren’t worth it.

A few key reminders:

Mindful enjoyment always beats rigid rules.

Keep Your Body Moving

Movement doesn’t have to be complicated. Even a 15-minute brisk walk can shift your energy and mood.

A few reminders:

Consistency—not intensity—is what gets you through the season feeling strong.

Manage Stress with Intention

Holiday stress is real: family dynamics, financial pressure, social obligations, and travel chaos. Build in small pockets of restoration:

And remember: “No” is a complete sentence.

Try this boundary-setting phrase:

“I’d love to, but I can’t this time.”

Protecting your peace is a form of self-care.

Be Smart About Alcohol

I personally have all but given up alcohol—I don’t like how it makes me feel, and the more I learn about its effects, the more I choose to stay away.

If you do drink, do it intentionally:

Mindfulness helps you indulge without regret.

Prioritize Sleep (Even When It’s Hard)

Holiday schedules can throw everything off—late nights, visitors, travel, and even jet lag.

Do your best to:

Sleep is one of the biggest predictors of how you feel through the holidays.
