How to Enjoy the Holidays Without Wreaking Havoc on Your Health

The holiday season is a beautiful paradox: equal parts joy, magic, connection—and temptation. Rich meals, disrupted routines, late nights, travel, and stress can leave even the healthiest among us feeling drained by the time the new year arrives.
But here’s the good news: enjoying the season does not require sacrificing your well-being. With a few mindful strategies, you can celebrate wholeheartedly and stay balanced.
Over years of coaching individuals, I’ve learned that most people struggle with the all-or-nothing mentality. What works far better is embracing an 80/20 approach—making nourishing choices 80% of the time, while intentionally enjoying life’s indulgences the other 20%. This allows for pleasure, connection, and flexibility without the guilt spiral.
Here’s how to savor the festivities without starting January in recovery mode.
Set Clear Intentions for the Month
Before the season sweeps you up, pause and reflect:
- Which gatherings matter most to me?
- How do I want to feel?
- What do I want to say yes to?
- More importantly—what can I say no to?
Creating a mental roadmap helps you protect your energy, avoid overcommitting, and stay aligned with what genuinely nourishes you.
Enjoy Holiday Foods—Mindfully, Not Restrictively
Deprivation always backfires.
I know for myself that a small piece of homemade dessert is pure joy. I skip store-bought sweets because the ingredients often aren’t worth it.
A few key reminders:
- Prioritize your favorites. Don’t waste “treat space” on foods you don’t actually love.
- Honor your hunger.
Are you eating because…
– your stomach needs fuel?
– your taste buds want something sweet?
– you’re feeling emotional? - Stay nourished. Balanced meals and hydration go a long way. (We often mistake thirst for hunger!)
Mindful enjoyment always beats rigid rules.
Keep Your Body Moving
Movement doesn’t have to be complicated. Even a 15-minute brisk walk can shift your energy and mood.
A few reminders:
- Don’t exercise to “burn off” what you ate—that mindset leads to guilt, not health.
- Fit in short, doable routines like yoga, stretching, or home workouts.
- I personally use FIT ON, an app with free guided workouts in every style and length.
Consistency—not intensity—is what gets you through the season feeling strong.
Manage Stress with Intention
Holiday stress is real: family dynamics, financial pressure, social obligations, and travel chaos. Build in small pockets of restoration:
- A quiet cup of tea
- A walk alone
- Meditation or deep breathing
- A mindful moment in the car before going inside
And remember: “No” is a complete sentence.
Try this boundary-setting phrase:
“I’d love to, but I can’t this time.”
Protecting your peace is a form of self-care.
Be Smart About Alcohol
I personally have all but given up alcohol—I don’t like how it makes me feel, and the more I learn about its effects, the more I choose to stay away.
If you do drink, do it intentionally:
- Alternate drinks with water or seltzer
- Enjoy mocktails or seltzer with a twist
- Avoid drinking on an empty stomach
- Sip slowly and truly savor it
Mindfulness helps you indulge without regret.
Prioritize Sleep (Even When It’s Hard)
Holiday schedules can throw everything off—late nights, visitors, travel, and even jet lag.
Do your best to:
- Stick to your usual bedtime when possible
- Ease up on caffeine later in the day
- Take short naps when needed
- Create a relaxing nighttime routine
Sleep is one of the biggest predictors of how you feel through the holidays.
