Natural Remedies and Essential Oils for Summer Wellness
Summer brings warmth, sunshine, and outdoor activity—and with all the joy of nature in the summer, it also brings heat, bugs, sunburns, and allergies. For all the minor irritations nature can cause in the summer, she also provides simple remedies to ease your woes and help you focus on the joy.
Here are a few suggestions for essential oils and natural remedies especially that can be helpful during the summer months.
- Peppermint Oil: Add a few drops to a spray bottle with water to make a lovely cooling mist.
- Eucalyptus Oil: Opens airways and cools the body.
- Spearmint Oil: Gentler than peppermint, safe for kids, still cooling.
- Peppermint or Spearmint Tea can cool you off from the inside out, and they are easy to grow. I keep mine in a pot as they can spread. There are many varieties of mint to enjoy as an herbal tea or chopped in a salad. My most recent favorite is chocolate mint, though it tastes nothing like chocolate to me.
- Cilantro and Parsley: Naturally detoxifying and cooling when eaten fresh. This time of year, they can be added abundantly to salads if you are planting parsley, plant a lot, as they are also a favorite of monarch caterpillars.
- Lavender oil or Aloe Vera juice: Applying either or both directly to the skin can help soothe heat rashes, sunburns, or any summer cuts and scrapes that may occur.

I live on a heavily wooded lot, so bugs are a constant issue. I love using doTERRA’s TerraShield—for both my dog and myself—and sometimes I add:
- Citronella: Classic mosquito repellent.
- Lemongrass: Effective against insects.
For bites that will still inevitably happen:
- Tea Tree Oil: Anti-inflammatory, relieves itch from bites.
- Lavender Oil: Soothing to the skin reduces inflammation from bites or stings.
- Lemon Balm (Melissa): Natural mosquito deterrent.
- Basil or Pantain: Applying the Crushed skin for itch relief from bites and stings
- Apple Cider Vinegar (diluted): Soothes bites and helps disinfect.
- Chamomile: Both the flower, tea, or essential oil are another sunburn ally. For the flower or tea, brew, cool, and use as a compress on sunburn for the essential oil dilute and apply to the affected area
- Oatmeal Baths: can help soothe itch or sunburned skin, and adding a few drops of Roman chamomile will add to the soothing effect
Summer comes with cookouts and maybe a little extra treats in the form of ice cream and sweet lemonade, which can cause tummy upset for some.
- Mint, Ginger and Fennel: They can all be soothing to our tummies, which is why doTERRA combined them and others into Digest-zen
My most important summertime advice is to stay hydrated! Recharge doTERRA’s excellent electrolyte solution with four types of magnesium, a unique 3:1 ratio of potassium to sodium, ginseng, and baobab extract for energy and cellular support.
